My Mother’s Favourite Friday Treat….

We were lucky enough to live just over the road from a fresh cake shop when we were young and it was a place we would often stop and peer into as we were passing. I remember, too often being dragged away with a ‘come on it’s time to go….’ The routine was, Friday was treat day and that was the day we were lucky enough to go in and choose one for after our tea.

When we were a little older and at school, we didn’t go to the cake shop with mum any more but we did tell her in the morning what cake we would like for our Friday treat. In those days we didn’t have a fridge. Instead, we had a small room which we called ‘the cold place.’ The room was next to our kitchen and it WAS really cold, even in the summer because the walls were bare brick and there was only a tiny window. In here was a stone slab on an old wooden table which did the job nicely. We kept milk, butter, cheese and anything which had to be kept cold on it. As children, we didn’t like going into this room much as it was dark as well as cold but when we returned home on a Friday, we would eagerly peak into the large white paper bag which was sitting on the stone slab to see if mum had remembered what we asked for; she always had, of course.

Vanilla Custard Slices are such a lovely creamy treat and not too difficult to make with a little patience. I am always pleasantly surprised by this plain little cake as it brings back such a lot of very happy memories…

Raspberry Doughnuts

The dough for this recipe is a fortified one as it includes extras to the basic bread dough; eggs, sugar and butter. They are deep fried and covered with sugar, then filled with a good amount of jam. Raspberry is the version we used to buy so I am sticking to tradition here. I don’t really think I will make any changes to this recipe as it is quite perfect just the way it is…

Flapjacks 3 Ways

When I was young I did not care for these so much, as the version we had in those days was pretty basic. Since then, I have pimped the recipe up by presenting three ways to make this lovely crispy treat. First a simply delicious honey and oat version followed by a fruit and nut flapjack which is lovely and chewy. Finally I have gone all out and added chocolate & raspberries to the third. I wonder which of these will be your favourite.

Hazelnut Chocolate Eclairs

So here is another of our delicious Childhood Treats. When visiting the cake shop on a Friday afternoon after all the day’s errands were complete, we would queue at the counter. This took some time as nothing was self-service in those days. Even the grocery shop had queues and there were no supermarkets then. Upon reaching the glass case which held the fresh creamy delights we would each choose our favourite and then we would hear our mum say, “and a chocolate eclair for dad.” I believe she asked dad what cake he would like in the early 1950s. He told her that he loved a chocolate eclair filled with cream. So dutifully, each week after that she would buy him one and he loved it. But one day, sometime in the 1970s he looked wistfully at the array of cakes waiting on a plate to be enjoyed and I remember him saying. “I know I said I liked chocolate eclairs 20 years ago but do you think I could have something different next week?” I imagine it was time for a change…….. Well, I’ve not had one of these for a very long time so I’m looking forward to them and I hope you enjoy them too…

A Deliciously Creamy Custard Tart….

These little beauties are one of my all-time favourites; a plain and simple custard tart.

Sometimes, simple things can be the most delightful. They have a lovely sweet pastry which has a wonderful semolina texture and they are filled with a beautifully creamy custard, not unlike a crème brûlée.

Just a sprinkle of nutmeg is all that is needed to make this dessert truly delicious and a perfect addition to my list of ‘Friday Treats’...

My favourite cake from the bakery on a Friday was the meringue because honestly, it was the biggest. I could however often be persuaded into trying something a little different. This is my interpretation of the Maid of Honour Tarts that would be one of the oh too attractive bakes, adorning the packed window display of that delightfully delicious bakery…
