How we used to love these as children. They were always bought fresh from the baker and were so beautifully soft and fluffy. They were split in two, popped under the grill and generously buttered. Perfect with poached eggs at the time but now they are an excellent base for a decadent eggs benedict...

Well, if you enjoy Rye Bread, then you are going to love this.

The dough is a mix of rye and strong plain flour to make a lighter texture and a beautifully flavoured bread that is perfect for eating straight out of the oven with butter melting on top or thinly cut and toasted with your early morning poached egg...

Try these Toasted Teacakes for an autumn treat with a nice hot cup of tea or coffee. I have recently rediscovered this lovely bake which we always used to have if we went to a cafe. The fresher they are, the better and they have to be toasted under the grill and have lashings of butter to complete the treat. Perfect on a windy day, real comfort food…

‘The Way to His Heart is Through His Stomach’….

How often have we heard this said! Well with these little treats you will certainly be going in the right direction. They take a little time as they need to prove as bread products do. However, they are certainly worth the wait.

Buttery and beautifully soft and chocolatey, everything you would want from a brioche. Perfect for breakfast, dipped in your favourite steaming hot coffee.

That smell of fresh bread as you enter the supermarket always smells so good as you lift your head to get a better sniff. I have been told that they deliberately pump this smell through the air conditioning to tempt us in at the door. When people are selling their houses I have also heard that baking fresh bread as viewers are expected makes them feel that this is a good place to call their home.

I always feel a great sense of satisfaction in making bread; seeing it rise to over double its size, kneading it and nurturing that living yeast to form one of the basic ingredients to a meal. Every country, every culture has its own wonderful variations to this basic recipe.

I have kept it simple today and have just added cheese. The bread itself is one that is great to make if you have a day in. Each of the 3 steps to make this takes only minutes and in between you can go off and continue your day, knowing that there will be a beautiful steaming loaf of fresh bread ready for you by teatime…

This is my go to recipe for bread these days. It takes just 3 hours from start to finish and tastes beautiful. You can make it with just strong white bread flour or if you like a little wholemeal in there as I do, you can mix half in half. I don’t use all wholemeal as it comes out too heavy for my liking but you can adjust the balance to suit your own taste. However fresh, shop bought bread is, there is nothing quite as good as homemade…

An Old Fashioned Sticky Bun

These Sticky Buns are something I remember from being a very young child. They came all joined together and we used to tear them apart, split them in half and spread butter before sandwiching them together again. When we used to come home for lunch from school for our tin of tomato soup, (made to go further with a little milk so it was enough for us all,) we were always glad to see the white paper bag on the table. We knew there was something sweet inside that mum had brought from the local bakers.

It was a tricky job to carefully rip the bag and gently peal it back so as not to have the icing stick to the top. If it did, we had to scrape it off with a knife and share it out amongst us. We were always most particular in making sure everyone had a fair share.

These days it’s easy to make them and they always remind me of the originals, happy memories….

Here is a fun breakfast idea you could share. It could be made in advance and frozen, then you could bring out as many as needed and top with your favourite breakfast treats. I have included some ideas for this in the recipe for you to try.
